A motorcycle passenger died after being hit by an automobile whose driver was using a mobile phone at the time of the collision, on the main road to Soekarno Hatta at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

The driver, Karim, was attempting to switch off a mobile phone that was ringing, causing him to lose sight of the motorcycle that had stopped at a traffic light in front of him.

On the motorcycle were a couple, Aliman and Husnul, and their young son, Alfan.

Aliman and Alfan were thrown around 15 meters from the impact. Husnul, however, hit the road and was then run over by the car, tribunnews.com reported Thursday.

The woman died on the scene while her husband and son suffered scrapes and bruises.

Bangkalan Traffic Police chief Adj.Pol.Comr. Samsul Maarif said the driver of the automobile, Karim, had violated the 2009 Traffic Law, which carries a maximum punishment of six years in prison.

“The driver also does not own a driver’s license,” he said, adding that the accident was a result of negligence
