Dialogue between Hamlet and his Conscience

Maria Ivanovna Tsvetaeva
8 October 1892 - 31 August 1892
Moscow, Russian Empire
She’s in the river-bed, covered in algae
And weeds…she went there to sleep,
Though there’s no peace there, either!
Yet I loved her,
More than forty thousand brothers
Have ever loved yet!
                                      – Hamlet!
She’s in the river-bed, covered in algae,
Algae! .....and her last wreath
Floats by the shore among branches…
Yet I loved her,
More than forty thousand….
                                     Though still
Less than a single lover.
She’s in the river-bed, covered
In algae – yet her –

                                      I loved?

  1. Terbaring kaku di tepian sungai, berselimut lumut
Dan ganggang... ia terlelap dalam tenang,
Meski di sana damai tak ditemuinya, pun!
    Namun ia kucinta,
dengan cinta melebihi empat puluh ribu lelaki
    yang singgah dalam cintanya!
    --- Hamlet!
Ia terbaring di tepian sungai, berselimut lumut
lumut! ... dan rangkaian kembang untuknya
tersangkut di antara rerantingan di tepian...
    Namun ia kucinta,
dengan cinta melebihi yang empat puluh ribu...
    --- Meski saja
Tak sebesar cintaku pada satu kekasih
Ia terbaring di tepian sungai, berselimut
ganggang -- namun tanya terbilang --

    --- ia kucintakah?
